If they were to share their feelings with anyone outside of their community they would never be related to, when they express their feelings of self loathing or share the fact that they have skipped a meal or two that day they would be judged instead of comforted.
These girls feel that this is the only place where they can tell the truth about how they really feel and actually have someone relate to them. All in all, the article was shocking and revealed the true feelings of people with eating disorders. This behavior is not just found in communities of young women with eating disorders, it can be found in any number of those with high-risk behavioral problems from drug use to alcoholism and so on.
Rather than just spewing facts at the reader about the dangers of eating disorders, Udovitch allows us to grow a relationship with a real anorexic girl. This community offers a sense of validation to these girls, a place to stand up for themselves and their choices in life.
The article showed me the complexity of eating disorders and how people who suffer from them really feel about themselves.
Because they have such a strong sense of acceptance they are not realizing the negative effects that their behavior has on them physically and psychologically.
